We have strong views about running Bassett Wood Farm in an environmentally friendly manner. We have already put a number of initiatives in place to reduce the amount of energy and particularly water used on the site.
Water
Approximately 2,400m3 of water is used across the site over the course of one year. All the water in the milking parlour is either recycled for washing the parlour area or the milk cooling water recycled as drinking water for the cows.
Milk is pre-cooled using a plate heat exchange.
Also roof water is redirected into water troughs. All these measurements result in significant water savings.
Electricity Use and Dairy Operations
The parlour pipe work has to be washed with hot water at least once a day and the water heater has been put onto a timer.
A new boiler and hot water tank have been fitted and conform to modern efficiency standards.
Environmentally friendly chemicals have been used in the dairy operations.
Measures have been put into place to reduce the amount of fertiliser used on the site.
Energy efficient bulbs have been installed throughout the buildings.
Double glazing has been fitted throughout the house and roof insulation has been topped up.
While operating our business, we use energy which results in carbon emissions. We want to reduce this as much as we can and therefore select only the most energy efficient equipment available and carefully control it so that no energy is wasted.
